Slippery when wet!

In a recent study by Britain's leading industrial health and safety facility, Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) of Buxton, Derbyshire, UK, safety flooring specialists undertook a series of slip assessments in a major food production facility. A large area of flooring without non-slip flooring protection had recently been installed throughout the facility's cooking, storage and transit areas. Although the floor appeared durable and easy to clean, workers using the floor complained that it felt slippery. HSL carried out their assessments using standard pendulum and surface roughness analysis techniques.

The results of the study showed that contamination of the floor with clean water resulted in an increased risk of slipping and falling. Since work processes used within the factory would have made it difficult to eliminate the water coming into contact with the floor, it was decided that modification of the floor surface with a non-slip surface coating was the most practical solution to reduce risks of slipping.

Initially, small test areas were designated to receive non-slip floor coatings, which were applied to the original surface and assessed by HSL over a period of months. The results indicated that the test areas treated with the non-slip coatings significantly reduced the risk of slipping. As a result, walkways throughout the factory were treated with the non-slip floor coatings and the number of slipping accidents has reduced.
